Additionally, ketone levels in urine may not always correlate perfectly with blood ketone levels, so it’s essential to use ketone test strips as part of an overall health monitoring plan.
Yes, ketone test strips do have an expiration date. It’s crucial to check the expiration date on the packaging before use and to discard any expired strips. Using expired test strips may result in inaccurate readings, compromising the effectiveness of the testing process. Proper storage according to the manufacturer’s instructions can help prolong the shelf life of the strips.
Ketone test strips work by detecting the presence of ketones in urine. When the body burns fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates, it produces ketones as a byproduct. These ketones can then be detected in urine using specialized test strips. The strips contain a chemical reagent that reacts with the ketones, causing a colour change. Users can compare the colour of the strip to a colour chart provided with the test strips to determine the level of ketones present.
For optimal testing, collect urine in a clean container, ensuring full immersion of all test strip fields. Avoid adding preservatives and ensure thorough mixing without centrifugation. Fresh morning urine is best, especially for nitrite, bilirubin, and urobilinogen tests. If immediate testing isn’t possible, refrigerate the sample without freezing, then bring it to room temperature. Be mindful of pH changes due to microbial growth in unpreserved urine. For accurate results, ensure cleanly voided specimens, particularly in females, to prevent contamination. Avoid skin cleansers containing chlorhexidine, which may affect results if contamination occurs.
Read the test results exactly 60 seconds after dipping the strip into the urine, but no longer than 2 minutes to avoid inaccurate readings. Ketones are typically absent in urine unless you’ve been fasting, dieting, or ill.
Ketone levels are indicated by a range of colours from pale pink to deep burgundy on the comparison chart, with readings ranging from 5 mg/dl (0.5mmol/L) to 160 mg/dl (16mmol/L). Glucose levels above 100mg/dl (6mmol/L UK reading) are considered abnormal, with colour changes on the comparison chart indicating concentrations from 100mg/dl (5.5mmol/L) to 2000mg/dl (111mmol/L), ranging from pale blue to dark brown. If there’s a slight colour change, repeat the test the following day.
