A disease caused by an allergy or sensitivity to a protein in cereals called gluten. Coeliac disease is quite common and affects about 1 in 1500 of the UK population. When eaten, gluten causes changes in the lining of the small intestine which impairs its ability to absorb nutrients from food.

The symptoms will usually disappear if a strict gluten-free diet is adopted.
